Soldier, runner, farmer - they have one thing in common: focus! Actually, the symbols that Paul uses in 2 Timothy 2 have plenty of similarities: Honest effort, discipline, we would say a disdain for instant gratification, and an appreciation for the better, but later reward. Don't drop the baton! Paul's leg of the gospel relay was almost completed; he wanted to be sure that Timothy's hands were steady, and that he was ready to run! Was grace a secret? In the opening chapter of 2 Timothy, Paul writes, "This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus...." When we saw the Savior, we saw the grace - the unmerited favor of God. And that's only the beginning! But this "promise of life" we've been studying is tied back to promises God made to the children of Israel. Don't skip the greeting! I admit that I tend to read, "Paul, an Apostle, and so on, blah blah blah..." and skip to the body of the letter. If you're doing that too, here's what we're missing: "Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God according to the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus...." That's everything, isn't it? Life, eternal life, is what everyone wants. There's a promise we can have it. And it's "in Christ Jesus." Timothy wasn't the only one to get gifts! We're reading 2 Timothy, and it's obvious that young Tim had some gift related to his ministry, imparted by the laying on of Paul's hands. That's not a gift given to everyone. But Paul continues by naming some gifts "we" have. Could you use some power in your life? Some love? Some self-control and discernment? Rest, then rise. As we wrap up our time with Daniel - this man who stayed faithful to God in a pagan land from his teens, through his old age - we feel the comfort of the words, "Go your way, Daniel; rest. Antichrists never win. When a man proclaims himself to be God, he belongs in a mental health facility, not on the throne. But when he rises to a position of power, we can count on two things happening: He'll try to exterminate the Jews, and he will come to a bad end. Where's the beef? If you've been studying the book of Daniel with us, you may have noticed that we took a bite out of chapter 10, and then we nibbled at chapter 12. The wise will shine! Daniel's supernatural visitor burst into poetry in the middle of his message. "Those who are wise will shine like the bright expanse of the heavens," he said, "and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever." They deal with prayers, and international affairs. Angels and other supernatural beings are real, and they are really involved in what happens in our world. Daniel saw them. Sometimes the messenger is more important than the message. Daniel had interpreted the dreams of kings; he had had his own dreams. He had seen visions. He had interviewed angels about the visions. The other time Jesus wept. We remember that the Lord cried in sympathy with the sisters of Lazarus. But Luke records another time that Jesus wept. Don't be alarmed, we're still studying the book of Daniel - specifically the End Times prophecy in Daniel 9. But that investigation has taken us forward in time to Luke 19, and what's known as the Triumphal Entry. We could also call it the "Tearful Entry," because Jesus saw Jerusalem as it would be. No excuses. When we examine the prayer in Daniel, chapter 9, we see confession, submission, petitions ... but no justifications. No excuses. You were right, God. We were wrong. Yet Daniel had a reason for asking for a blessing he didn't deserve. That reason was a promise in the Scriptures. And another reason: the compassion of God. The exile was almost over. Surely good times lay ahead! God gave Daniel a glimpse of the future, and it wasn't pretty. It contained persecution and "desolations." Well. Here we are. We woke up this morning in the Year of Our Lord 2,025. Did you think we would make it? It's a little surprising to me, I have to say. But God isn't surprised. Not fallowing is not following. Judah was taken into exile because of its idolatry, which doesn't surprise us. But there's another reason that God expelled the nation: they refused to follow His instructions for a 7-year sabbath of the farmland. There was more at issue than just nutrient replenishment of the soil. It was a question of who really owns that patch of earth, and whether He can be trusted to provide. "For I know the plans that I have for you...." One of the most comforting promises in the Bible is found in Jeremiah 29: "'For I know the plans that I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans for welfare and not for calamity, to give you a future and a hope.'" We know the verse, but do we know the context? It's right in the middle of Jeremiah's prophecy of a 70-year exile. Daniel was moved less by the general words of encouragement, and more by the math.
