We know about Satan's confrontation with Jesus in the wilderness, but he also attacked the Disciples later. The Lord won His personal battle with the devil, but the record of His followers' encounters with the Evil One was more "mixed," shall we say. Satan didn't go easy on them on account of the fact that they were "just learning." The time when King Satan caught an invader. From the devil's point of view he had won the world - we can't say "fair and square" - but he was the legal owner of this property called Earth. Now, Someone had broken into his estate. He recognized this Intruder, even though He was much different now. Civil war... in Heaven? When a country tears itself apart, we gather that something has gone horribly wrong. Does Satan know your name? Many of us can look back to a specific hour when we realized: God knows my name. He loves me. Jesus died for me. I can have a unique relationship with Him. Angels have no savior! It's a chilling thought that those exalted beings who joined Satan's rebellion against God have no way to repent, or even surrender. They're doomed to follow their chosen path to its bitter end. In contrast, the holy angels will participate in God's judgment - from the other side. We are not alone. If you want to know whether there's life "out there" in the universe, you don't need 400-million dollars of high-tech equipment. Just open a Bible. In the pages of Scripture you'll find sentient, non-human, created beings all over. If that makes you feel a bit weird, that's an appropriate response. And it should also make us confident. Timing -is- everything! When we read the list of things that are appropriate in their time, in Ecclesiastes 3, we may be shocked. If there is "a time for war" as well as "a time for peace," then we need to be much more concerned about what time it is! Jesus often referred to this divine chronometry, with comments like, "My time has not yet come..." and, to doubters: "You cannot interpret the signs of the times." Solomon called them, "seasons." Are we spiritual beings, or are we animals? Solomon ran the experiment; it's a shame we didn't review his findings in Ecclesiastes. For half a century our culture has tried to live as if we are only material beings. And it doesn't work. Mental illness is epidemic. Empty people attach themselves to social causes and political campaigns in hopes of finding meaning. But if meaning is to be found, we'll have to look higher. God won't act until we ask. Perhaps the most basic and most mysterious aspect of prayer is the question of why it's necessary at all. The Almighty knows our needs, He knows what we're going to ask - so why ask? The answer has something to do with how God likes to work. He desires to get us involved in advancing His agenda. Would you pay for the sins of people who are murdering you? Jesus did! We stand in awe of the words we hear from the Man on the middle cross: "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do." See how Jesus forgives. The robber on the cross; the soldiers driving the nails; the religious frauds driving the whole nightmarish scene - all aroused mercy, not judgment, in the Lord's heart. We could add the Samaritan woman at the well, and many others. This kind of radical forgiveness isn't intended to be unique to Christ. We Christ-ones are on the same mission, supposedly endowed with the same Spirit.
